Team Mountain Khakis/SmartStop began as Time Pro Cycling in 2006. The team has grown into its current incarnation under the guidance of team owners Jamie Bennett and Pat Raines, both former professional cyclists and North Carolina residents. Team Mountain Khakis/SmartStop has experienced great success in the USA Crits Series in recent years, winning the overall titles 3 times, once with Mark Hekman in 2009, with Isaac Howe in 2010, and again with Luke Keough last year. In addition to the individual titles the team has won the overall team title 4 years in a row. In 2012 the team hopes to continue its success in the criterium discipline and showcasing our riders talents in the USA Crits Series and USA Cycling’s new National Criterium Calendar (NCC).
Team Mountain Khakis/SmartStop exists to give young riders a chance at becoming career professional bike racers. To meet this goal we have created a program that is capable of providing a framework of success by establishing a strong national caliber elite team focused on performance, learning, mentoring, and development in a positive and fostering atmosphere. This program is built for the riders and designed to be sustainable, it is intended to give the riders maximum exposure at events and allow them to showcase their abilities and chase their dreams. This combination of developmental and practical environments produces a well-rounded rider who knows the TRADE of cycling and is capable of making the step to the next level in the sport and pursuing a strong and lasting career.
We want the riders to go for the big victory and have the ability to learn from their mistakes if they fall short. Although we are committed to developing riders who may have their best years riding at a bigger level after they graduate from our program, we are selecting riders capable of winning big races and having a breakout season. Breakout seasons that may not have come to fruition riding in the service of more established riders.
