The Austin Flyers was originally founded in 2001 as a women's road racing team. In 2002, we expanded to include all genders and added a recreational cycling focus by becoming a club focused on fostering the growth of cycling in the Austin community, teaching beginning and intermediate cycling skills to interested individuals, and offering instruction and support to those interested in racing. From 2002 through 2005, the Austin Flyers grew into a highly active recreational club which provided weekly road and mountain bike training rides, hosted skills clinics, and supported various community activities.
In 2006, the Austin Flyers returned to its racing roots by reintroducing a formal women's road racing team, named Team Joy Rides. The team was highly successful, winning the Texas State Road Racing Championship, the Texas Cup Team Championship, and placing two riders in the top five of the Women's Open competition, two riders in the top five of the Women's P/1/2 competition, and one rider in the top five of the Women's Category 4 competition. Additionally, the success of the Austin Flyers women was not limited to Texas, with top ten results in races throughout the United States (such as Tulsa Tough, Joe Martin, and the Gateway Cup). The women's racing team continued to race as the Austin Flyers from 2007 through 2009. During this time, the team enjoyed continued success, including winning the Elite team competitions 3 years in a row and placing riders in the top five of the individual competitions year after year.
We experienced phenomenal growth in 2009, growing from 7 to 20 race team members, with 15 or more women regularly joining us for our weekly Wednesday night rides. This made us realize that there are a lot of women who are looking for the motivation of a supportive group of other ladies to get out and ride their bikes.
So in 2010, Austin Flyers Women's Cycling is going back to our focus of providing a supportive environment that encourages women to spend more time on their bikes! Thanks to the gracious support of Mellow Johnny's Bike Shop, the Pedal Hard Training Center, Pure Austin Fitness, Holland Racing, and many others, we will be hosting regular group rides, monthly skills development rides, quarterly skill building workshops, the monthly Ladies' Night at the Driveway Crit Series, as well as other purely social activities.
Our mission is simple: we want all women who are interested in cycling to be confident in their abilities, knowledgeable of their rights and responsibilities on the road, and most importantly, to love riding their bikes.
If you are a woman who likes to ride her bike and lives in the Austin area, we hope you will consider joining us, and look forward to seeing you at one of our future events!
